Something About Watches

It tells time!

I've been getting some ads about watches lately, so in the fashion of the best consumerist pig-dogs I've been browsing the Casio website quite a bit for the past few weeks, looking through all the different variations of G-Shocks, salivating and stroking myself through my pants. Personally, I like the look of analog watches, but the value proposition compared to digital isn't great. Fashion is cool and all but you can get pretty serious water resistance, five alarms, 31 timezones, and a stop watch for like $25. It's hard to justify spending $400+ for a basic watch because it's, like, fully mechanical or something? Am I paying more for the privilege of having to wind it up every so often? It doesn't make sense to me.

Anyway, I've had a few Casio digital watches over the years, and they've all been pretty great. I really do like the sort of retro looks they have, even if they don't have the sort of timeless elegance of other timepieces. Plus, they're just limited enough so as not to be a hassle to own and use. I get that some people like smart watches, but the last thing I want in my life is another thing I have to make sure is hooked up to a charger when I go to bed. Plus, aside from things like reading biometrics, I don't really see a point to using them. They seem like an expensive novelty item.

So, what I think I'm going to do is pick up a GWM5610 and then buy an off-white bezel cover and a red bull bar off Aliexpress to add to it. The 5610 has solar battery charging and picks up atomic clock signals so I (shouldn't) have to resync the time every other month like I do with my other watches, but it's pretty basic looking, which is what the mods are for. Maybe I'll put up a picture when I put it all together. We'll see how cool it looks when I'm done.

Happy holidays, if you celebrate around this time of year! Stay safe out there!
